Important Factors

Before you start designing your garden, you might want to pay attention to some of these factors. It will help you organize your plants better and make your design process easier.

1. Elements

In a garden, there are two important elements. The hardscape (paths, walls, and decking) and the soft scape (planting area).

These two needs to be considered thoroughly when you are trying to create garden landscaping. You also need to consider the budget for element maintenance, especially if you are aiming for a luxurious garden look.

2. Location

The Garden’s location is another important factor that you need to pay attention to. It influenced the design you will create for the garden.

Topographical features such as slopes, vistas, and hills can be advantaged to create a unique touch for your garden. Different locations can also affect the types of soil you have for your garden.

3. Soil

Plants will rely heavily on the soil. That’s why the garden’s soil quality needs to be perfected. It includes monitoring water and nutrient availability.

Soil microorganisms, and also temperatures. However, you can also replace the initial soil or improve it by adding other elements such as compost, peat, mineral dust, or manure.

4. Surface

Commonly, the surface of a garden is a smooth lawn. However, this will cause some worries if used for public garden design.

You might see resin-bonded gravel for garden landscaping surfaces. It is to avoid the plants from getting affected by other parts of the surfaces.

These types of surfaces are not commonly to be found in private gardens.

5. Boundaries

Between the design and boundaries, there is a high connection. The design can affect the natural boundaries of the garden, while the boundaries of the garden can influence the design of your garden.

Both of these things can be modified. When you walk into a garden, the types of boundaries you will see are hedges, walls, and even fences.

These boundaries are commonly created to keep out livestock or even keep the plants safe from predators.

History of Garden Design Landscaping

Garden Landscaping

When it comes to beauty, you can give it up to Persian gardens. They are the first aesthetic original garden with diverse planting designs.

Usually, a Persian garden will be divided into four sectors that represent Zoroastrian elements; sky, earth, water, and plants. In these gardens, water holds the biggest influence on both irrigation and aesthetics.

However, if you are looking for a garden design that allows you to plant flowers and other kinds of vegetative, you might want to look up Medieval European gardens.

In the past, Medieval European gardens were a mix of medicinal herbs, consumable vegetables, and decorative flowers.

In the next era, renaissance gardens can be one of your garden design ideas. They are purely aesthetic with a geometrical layout.

However, there’s a slight difference between the Italian Renaissance garden and the French Renaissance. The plants in the Italian Renaissance garden are geometrical and form spaces and patterns.

In the French Renaissance, they chose to pursue the formal garden aesthetic. It includes radiating avenues and paths of gravel, lawns, and basins in geometric shapes.

In Asia, the garden design is more asymmetrical. For example, Japanese garden design is influenced heavily by Chinese philosophy.

Most of them have lakes and representations of mountains and islands. There will also be shrines to Shinto made from rocks or boulders. The distinctive element is white pebbles that signify purity.

Now that you know all the important factors and the history of garden landscaping, you will proceed to execute the design.

Now, take notes of all of these elements that could make your design stands out and result in the prettiest garden for your house or any buildings that you are working on.

  • Garden Furniture

Isn’t it nice to see a garden that can also be a place to unwind after a long tiring week? That’s why you need to include garden furniture.

You could add tables and chairs for teatime, benches if you are feeling aesthetic, and swings for your kids. For a luxurious garden.

You can also add artifacts or statues that become the highlight of your garden. For a bigger garden, you can also add a fixed picnic table for barbeque night with the whole family.

  • Lighting

Adding fairy lights could also be a great garden design idea. It is an important element in your garden because it could also highlight the plants in your garden.

Commonly, lighting techniques are classified and defined by height. There are three types of garden lighting; safety lighting, uplighting, and downlighting. Each one creates different effects for your garden.

For this element, you also need to pay attention to the sunlight supply. We all know that sunlight is a natural element that can’t be controlled.

So, it’s important to make sure that your garden design doesn’t have too many shady plants that could obstruct sunlight, especially if you are also using low plants.

Your garden design needs to be compatible with natural light conditions. That also includes nearby buildings or property.

  • Plants

When it comes to the aesthetic factors of a garden, you will want to use plants that are low maintenance. It doesn’t need daily watering while fertilizing and pruning can be done periodically.

The recommended plant that you can use is an Abelia, also known as the Kaleidoscope. It has small white flowers with color-changing leaves according to the season.

It is also not too high and can also apply as a hedge or natural boundary for your garden. Abelia is also one of the low-maintenance small garden designs.

  • Native Garden

If you want a garden with a natural landscape look, you can try a native garden. This landscape will adapt to the climate, geography, and hydrology.

It also requires zero to no pesticides, fertilizers, and even watering sessions. They also develop special immunity to pests and diseases.

This landscape will attract other species such as butterflies, birds, and other wildlife.

  • Contemporary Garden

A garden landscape that has been gaining popularity in the UK for the last 10 years is the Contemporary Garden.

This happens because modern housing only includes a small garden with a contemporary design.

This initiates architecture to play with the style and focus on hardscapes such as stone, hardwood, and rendered walls.

That is all that you need to know about garden design landscaping. There are many ways that you can organize your garden to reach the aesthetic point.

You can find inspiration in any era, but it all depends on how you want your garden to look. After all, you are the one that will enjoy that part of your house daily.
